Study in the United States and Educational Exchange
Study in the United States and educational exchange programs at American Corner Cape Town supports United States policy priorities by providing access to accurate information on United States higher education, scholarships, and exchange opportunities. They foster global engagement, academic growth, and people-to-people connections between the United States and local communities.

EducationUSA
EducationUSA at American Corner Cape Town promotes United States higher education opportunities by providing accurate guidance on admissions, scholarships, and application processes. The program aligns with American policies by fosters academic exchange, global learning, and cross-cultural connections
1. Mission and Global Network
EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 430 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries. Its mission is to promote U.S. higher education to students around the world by offering accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States.
It serves as the official link between international students and the nearly 4,000 accredited U.S. colleges and universities.
2. The "5 Steps to U.S. Study"
Advisers guide students through a standardized five-step process to ensure they find the "best fit" for their academic and personal goals:
-
Research Your Options: Finding the right institution.
-
Finance Your Studies: Understanding costs and finding scholarships/financial aid.
-
Complete Your Application: Navigating requirements and standardized tests (SAT, GRE, etc.).
-
Apply for Your Student Visa: Understanding the visa interview and documentation.
-
Prepare for Your Departure: Pre-departure orientations to prepare for life in America.
3. The Opportunity Funds Program (OFP)
One of the most impactful initiatives offered in South Africa is the Opportunity Funds Program.
-
Target: Highly motivated, academically talented students from low-income backgrounds.
-
What it covers: While EducationUSA does not provide full university scholarships itself, the OFP pays for the up-front costs of the application process, including testing fees, application fees, and sometimes airfare and settling-in allowances.
-
Goal: To help students who are competitive for full financial aid from U.S. universities but cannot afford the initial costs of applying.
4. EducationUSA Cape Town
In Cape Town, the advising center is a critical part of the American Corner and the U.S. Consulate's outreach.
-
Group Advising: The Cape Town center typically hosts Monthly General Information Sessions (often on the last Thursday of every month at the American Corner in the Central Library). Attendance at one of these sessions is usually a mandatory first step before receiving individual advising.
-
Scholars Program: For those who show high potential, the center offers "Scholars" cohorts—regular group meetings that walk students through the entire application cycle over several months.
-
Resources: The center provides access to SAT/ACT study guides, information on various U.S. regions, and direct access to advisers who have expert knowledge of both the South African and American education systems.
-
Access: Because it is hosted within the U.S. Consulate framework, some services (like individual appointments) may require prior booking or security clearance, while the monthly sessions at the American Corner are more publicly accessible.
5. Services for U.S. Institutions
EducationUSA also helps U.S. university recruiters understand the South African landscape, helping them connect with local high schools and universities to attract South African talent to American campuses.
